A recent CNN poll conducted by SSRS reveals that the Democratic Party holds a 10-point advantage over Republicans nationwide in voters’ choice for their own congressional district as the midterm elections approach. This lead is largely driven by widespread anti-President Donald Trump sentiment and voters’ strong desire for change in Washington.

Widespread Desire for Change and Low Trump Approval

More than 75% of voters see the midterm elections as an opportunity to change the current political direction in Washington. President Trump’s approval rating stands at a record low of 32%, and voters express significant dissatisfaction with both the economy and the overall state of the country nearly two years into unified Republican control of the federal government. These feelings pose a considerable challenge for the GOP as it seeks to maintain control of Congress.

Democrats’ Broad Support Across Key Demographics

The poll highlights Democrats’ 49% to 39% lead among registered voters nationwide, the largest margin in CNN polling since just before the 2020 election. This advantage is underpinned by strong support from traditional Democratic constituencies, including Black voters who favor Democrats by 70 percentage points, Latino voters by 40 points, women by 21 points, and younger adults by 31 points. Independents also lean Democratic by 15 points, while those extremely motivated to vote favor the party by 18 points.

Economic Concerns and Voter Skepticism

Economic issues remain the top concern for voters, with Democrats leading Republicans 46% to 37% among those who prioritize the economy. Democrats are seen as better equipped to handle economic and cost-of-living challenges. However, about 30% of voters believe neither party would effectively manage these issues, and a similar portion feels neither party has the right priorities. Beyond the economy, corruption and the state of U.S. democracy are cited by 19% and 18% of voters, respectively, as their top concerns.

Trump’s Declining Support and Changing Political Landscape

President Trump’s approval ratings on economic issues fall even lower than his overall approval, with only 27% approving of his economic policies and 23% approving on inflation management. Two-thirds of Americans, including roughly one-third of Republicans, believe his policies have worsened economic conditions. While many feel Trump has overreached in his use of presidential power and deportations, nearly 70% say he has not done enough to reduce prices.

Trump’s approval among Republicans has dropped to a new low of 74%, down from 88% in February 2023. Younger Republicans and Republican-leaning independents are particularly critical, with nearly 40% of Republican-aligned adults under 45 disapproving of his presidency. They rate him roughly 20 points worse than older Republicans on economic issues and priorities.

Challenges Ahead Despite Democratic Lead

Even with the Democrats’ 10-point national lead, the potential for significant gains may be limited by mid-decade redistricting and many competitive races taking place in GOP strongholds. A 10-point margin in the popular vote would represent a roughly 13-point swing from the 2024 House popular vote, but many races are occurring in districts President Trump carried by double digits, which could limit Democratic pickups.

As voters prepare to cast their ballots, economic anxieties and dissatisfaction with the current political landscape continue to shape the electoral environment, positioning Democrats with a substantial but potentially challenging path ahead in the 2026 midterms.
