James Talarico Defeats Ken Paxton in Texas Senate Race, Challenges Elon Musk’s Influence

Associated Press

Texas Democrat James Talarico claimed victory over Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in the closely watched Texas Senate race on Wednesday, sending a clear message to billionaire Elon Musk, who invested more than $150 million to support Paxton’s campaign. Talarico called his win a mandate to reform campaign finance and reduce the influence of mega-donors in politics.

Talarico’s Message to Elon Musk and Big Money in Politics

Speaking hours after his projected win on “CBS Mornings,” Talarico criticized Musk’s unprecedented financial backing of the Republican candidate, saying, “The people of Texas delivered a crystal-clear message to the world’s first trillionaire: Texas is not for sale.” He emphasized that political power belongs to the people and vowed to keep it that way.

Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, donated over $158 million in September to the Senate Leadership Fund PAC, which funneled money to Texas PAC supporting Paxton. Additionally, Musk’s trust contributed $10 million to the Lone Star Liberty PAC, aimed at electing Paxton. Despite this massive spending, Talarico said voters rejected attempts to buy influence.

Why Musk Invested Heavily Against Talarico

Pressed on Musk’s motives, Talarico suggested that the billionaire sought a senator loyal to his interests, stating, “He wanted his very own personal senator.” Talarico accused Musk of wanting control over Texas land, water, and taxpayer funds to benefit data centers and other projects.

In contrast, Talarico highlighted his record of opposing billionaires’ influence and fighting corruption in state government. He pledged to continue this work in the U.S. Senate and asserted that Texans expect him to stand up for them rather than wealthy donors.

Broader Implications of the Texas Senate Race

Talarico’s win is part of a larger Democratic surge, with the party projected to control the U.S. Senate next Congress, holding 54 seats after victories in key battleground states. Democrats are projected to flip 10 of 11 competitive Senate races, including South Carolina, Kansas, Maine, Iowa, Ohio, and North Carolina. The Alaska and Mississippi races remain too close to call.

In Texas, Democratic state Representative Gina Hinojosa is also projected to unseat Republican Governor Greg Abbott, who was seeking a fourth term. This would mark the first Democratic governor in Texas in over 30 years.

Talarico’s Agenda and Vision for the Senate

With Democrats poised to lead the Senate, Talarico said his party has a “mandate the size of Texas” to pass meaningful legislation. He called for bipartisan efforts to enact economic policies benefiting all Americans, universal healthcare, and investments in education.

The Democrat also expressed the belief that Americans are tired of political divisions fueled by tech company owners who “pit us against each other” by race, party, gender, religion, and culture. He said this divisiveness distracts from critical issues such as education cuts, healthcare reductions, and unfair tax policies.

Regarding Senate leadership, Talarico said he looks forward to meeting with Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer to learn about his vision for the Senate and the country.

Talarico’s decisive victory in Texas signals a shift in political dynamics and a challenge to the outsized influence of billionaires in American politics.
