On October 28, during a midterm rally in Chillicothe, Ohio, President Donald Trump promised to send every American adult a $5,000 check if Republicans retain control of Congress. Comedian Jimmy Kimmel responded on Wednesday by condemning the promise as a “ridiculous and relentless” lie and dissecting Trump’s comments about how the money could be spent.

Kimmel Highlights Trump’s $5,000 Check Promise

Earlier in the week, President Trump said the $5,000 payments would come with a stipulation that recipients could not spend the money overseas. Trump suggested that the funds could be spent domestically, including at his Florida club, Mar-a-Lago. Kimmel mocked this idea, calling Mar-a-Lago a “members-only mausoleum,” and played a clip of Trump inviting supporters to be his guests at the club.

Trump’s Self-Undermining Statement About Supporters

However, Trump quickly undercut the invitation by saying most supporters could not afford to eat at Mar-a-Lago even with the $5,000 check. “The problem is that for $5,000, the most you’ll be able to buy is a hamburger and maybe a small dessert. I’m not even sure you could buy that,” Trump said, prompting boos from Kimmel’s studio audience.

Kimmel reacted with disbelief, asking, “Why are you saying this out loud? Why are you telling these people who’ve gathered to see you in their Chinese-made, American-flag Hawaiian shirts that they can’t afford to eat at your house? How is that helping you?”

Kimmel’s Critique: Trump Out of Touch

Kimmel concluded that President Trump is “completely out of touch,” noting that when Trump is in touch, it is “usually without consent.” He labeled the $5,000 check promise as the “biggest lie of all,” citing ex-prosecutors who called the offer a “bribe.”

The comedian’s sharp critique reflects intense scrutiny of Trump’s tactics as the midterm elections approach, highlighting contradictions within the president’s own statements to his base.

President Trump’s rally at the Shoemaker Center in Chillicothe on October 28 saw him throwing MAGA hats to the crowd, emphasizing his continued campaign efforts to secure Republican control in Congress.

As the midterms near, Kimmel’s remarks underscore the skepticism and backlash from media personalities regarding Trump’s promises and rhetoric.
