First Lady Melania Trump will convene representatives from Russia and Ukraine at the White House this Thursday in a notable diplomatic effort following a ceasefire in the Ukrainian city of Oleshky last month. The meeting aims to build on the limited truce that facilitated humanitarian aid and evacuations amid ongoing conflict.

Details of the White House Meeting

According to the first lady’s office on Tuesday, Melania Trump will personally host Ukraine’s ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets and his Russian counterpart Yana Lantratova. Both officials have previously met, including during the ceasefire in Oleshky last week, but have not participated in high-level U.S. negotiations before. They are expected to be accompanied by other officials with negotiation experience.

The Kremlin confirmed on Wednesday that Lantratova will be joined by Kirill Dmitriev, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy and an experienced negotiator. Ukrainian media reported that lawmaker and negotiator David Arakhamia will accompany Lubinets. The first lady is also set to deliver remarks regarding the ceasefire during the meeting.

Background on the Oleshky Ceasefire

On October 23, Melania Trump announced she had secured a localized ceasefire in Oleshky to allow the safe evacuation of elderly residents. The ceasefire began on October 27 and ended on Sunday, resulting in the evacuation of nearly 800 people, including a man who had been separated from his wife for 1,711 days. The mission was described by Trump on X as a success that delivered critical aid and facilitated humane evacuations.

The humanitarian crisis in Oleshky was severe, with residents forced to eat grass and weeds and lacking access to medicine, clean water, and electricity, according to Ukraine’s foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha. The first lady’s office stated she acted as the “exclusive intermediary,” working directly with Ukrainian and Russian leadership through channels she had previously established while reuniting children separated by the war.

Recognition from Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Wednesday that he awarded Melania Trump the Order of Princess Olga. This civil decoration honors her “significant personal contributions” to humanitarian support for Ukraine and her “active human rights and charitable work aimed at rescuing Ukrainian children and citizens.”

Trump has maintained a low public profile during President Donald Trump’s second term but has engaged in substantive behind-the-scenes diplomatic and humanitarian efforts, including her work on the Oleshky ceasefire.

Origins of the Humanitarian Effort

The dire situation in Oleshky came to Melania Trump’s attention at a private discussion during the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. Earlier reports from CNN noted that Pope Leo had discussed the humanitarian crisis in Oleshky with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a phone call while recovering from lung cancer surgery. The Kremlin stated Putin supported the Vatican’s intention to help alleviate the conditions there.

As Melania Trump brings together Russian and Ukrainian representatives at the White House, this gathering marks an unprecedented diplomatic initiative by an American first lady, aiming to build on progress toward peace and humanitarian relief amid ongoing conflict.
