Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed addressed the controversy surrounding transgender athletes in girls’ sports during a recent “60 Minutes” interview, describing the issue as largely manufactured. Speaking with correspondent Ross Douthat, El-Sayed emphasized that his campaign is not about governing sports, but rather about broader political and economic challenges facing voters.

El-Sayed Labels Transgender Sports Debate as Manufactured

When asked about transgender athletes’ participation in girls’ sports, El-Sayed responded, “I’m not running to govern sports, right?” He suggested that decisions about sports eligibility should be left to sports governing bodies, not political candidates. El-Sayed further argued, “I think we manufacture these social issues because here’s the thing about it, Ross. You have an iPhone in your pocket probably or is it an iPhone or a Samsung?”

He stressed that the free flow of information through smartphones and the internet makes it impossible for parents to shield children from certain ideas. Instead, he said parents should engage with their children to explain their beliefs and help them navigate the world.

Focus Should Be on Economic Challenges, Not Cultural Disputes

El-Sayed accused those emphasizing cultural disputes, such as transgender participation in sports, of diverting attention from pressing economic issues. He stated, “A lot of the cultural war issues that get fought right now are about trying to distract us from the fact that we can’t afford our gas, can’t afford our groceries, can’t see a doctor, are worried about whether or not our kids are going to have a good life.”

His comments came amid a broader discussion about parental control over education and tensions between some Muslim voters and cultural liberalism. The interview included questions on what schools teach and transgender students’ participation on sports teams.

Republican Opponent Criticizes El-Sayed’s Stance

El-Sayed faces Republican former Rep. Mike Rogers in the upcoming Michigan Senate race. Rogers has taken a firm stance against transgender athletes competing in girls’ sports. During his 2024 campaign, Rogers signed the Independent Women’s Voice’s Stand With Women Commitment, pledging to support legislation preserving female opportunities and private spaces.

Rogers stated, “Biological men should not be competing with our daughters, period.” He also released an ad on Aug. 28 highlighting his opposition to transgender athletes in female sports, part of a coordinated seven-figure campaign effort. Rogers criticized El-Sayed by saying, “Abdul thinks football is bad, but men playing in women’s sports is good.”

El-Sayed’s Past Advocacy for Transgender Students

In a March 2018 interview during his Michigan governor campaign, El-Sayed expressed support for protecting transgender students’ access to sports teams matching their gender identity. He said the state should “protect access to bathrooms, to locker rooms, to sports teams of choice for young people.” El-Sayed argued that exclusion could worsen bullying and mental health challenges and that government has a responsibility to safeguard transgender students.

The issue has sparked federal investigations and litigation in Michigan. On June 18, the U.S. Education Department opened Title IX investigations into several Michigan school districts over allegations involving athletic participation and locker-room access based on gender identity. These investigations have not concluded any violations. Additionally, a lawsuit was filed against Monroe Public Schools and others concerning transgender athlete participation and locker-room sharing. Monroe’s school board voted to restrict girls’ sports and locker rooms to biological females.

As the Michigan Senate race heats up, the debate over transgender participation in female sports remains a contentious topic, with El-Sayed framing it as a distraction from economic priorities and Rogers emphasizing protections for biological females in sports.
