Stephen Miller, White House deputy chief of staff, has unintentionally reignited public demands for transparency regarding President Donald Trump’s health after calling for Texas Democratic nominee James Talarico to release his medical records. Miller’s post on X Sunday sparked a wave of responses urging Trump to set an example by sharing his own medical details.
Miller Calls Out Talarico’s Medical Absence
On Sunday, Stephen Miller, 41, took to X to question Texas State Representative James Talarico’s health status amid speculation surrounding the Democrat’s extended campaign absence. Miller wrote, “Talafreako needs to release the medical records (if they exist at all),” referencing Talarico’s reported illness. The Democrat had first mentioned being unwell with the flu on September 30 during a virtual meeting, following attendance at an in-person event the day before. Miller’s comment came less than a month before the midterm elections, at a sensitive moment in the Texas Senate race where Talarico’s opponent, Trump-backed Ken Paxton, was vulnerable.
Public Pushes Back, Demands Trump’s Records
Miller’s post quickly drew a flood of replies, many from X users and MAGA supporters who turned the spotlight back on Trump’s own health. One comment read, “Just like your boss has released his!” while another added, “So does Trump…. the real in-depth ones.” Others questioned the precedent for releasing medical records after common illnesses, with one user writing, “No, he really doesn’t. How many members of congress release their medical records every time they’re sick? Has Trump released his yet from the shooting in PA?”
Some comments grew more pointed, accusing President Trump of withholding critical health information. “Maybe when Trump release his. The American ppl deserve to know why his hands are rotting from the inside out,” wrote one user. Another highlighted the prolonged absence of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, asking, “Let’s see Trump’s medical records and McConnell’s. Why are you relentlessly attacking Talarico? It’s weird.”
Trump Amplifies Speculation on Talarico’s Illness
Trump himself weighed in on the controversy. On Thursday, he posted on Truth Social: “TalaFREAKo has been missing for 12 days! Now, after looking for him throughout all of Texas, and beyond, probably even weirder places than anyone would think possible, he put out a statement that he has the ‘flu.’ 12 days is a long time to rid yourself of the so-called flu bug. What’s going on?”
Trump’s post escalated speculation that Talarico’s absence was due to more than just a flu diagnosis, casting doubt on the Democrat’s explanation less than two weeks before Election Day.
Talarico Returns, Affirms Flu Diagnosis
Despite the controversy, James Talarico reemerged publicly the next day at the Austin City Limits festival. Speaking to The New York Times, he confirmed he had been “home sick in bed” with “a nasty case of the flu.” Talarico also urged the public to get vaccinated, saying, “Everybody should get the flu shot,” before entering the music event.
The episode highlights the intense scrutiny faced by political candidates’ health during election seasons, as well as the political risks of demanding transparency from opponents without being prepared to answer similar questions about one’s own party leaders.
