NFL Hall of Famer and FOX Sports broadcaster Terry Bradshaw has openly criticized President Donald Trump, admitting he was “afraid to say” his true feelings about the president ahead of the November Midterms. This marks a rare moment where Bradshaw, known primarily for his sports commentary, ventured into the political arena to express concern over the president’s conduct.
Bradshaw’s Fear of Taking a Political Stand
On The Rich Roll Podcast, Bradshaw described his hesitation to speak out, explaining, “I can’t believe that we live in a world where we have a leader that insults people. God, I have a hard time with that. Insults women. God, I have a hard time with it, and I’m so afraid to say it.” He further added that taking a side risks alienating half the country, saying, “There are 350 million Americans, and if you split them down the middle, that’s 175 million, right? Yeah. If I don’t want to lose 175. Of course not.” This candid admission highlights the divisive political climate and the pressure public figures face when addressing it.
Bradshaw’s Career and Broadcasting Legacy
At 78 years old, Bradshaw remains one of the most respected figures in American sports. His NFL legacy includes four Super Bowl championships as quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers. After retiring from professional football, he launched a broadcasting career in 1984 that has spanned over three decades, most notably with FOX Sports. Despite his long tenure, Bradshaw appears to be approaching retirement, potentially after FOX’s Super Bowl coverage in 2029.
History of Bradshaw’s Criticism Toward Trump
Bradshaw has previously expressed disapproval of President Trump’s stance on NFL players’ protests. In 2017, he criticized Trump’s call for NFL owners to fire players who knelt during the national anthem, stating on FOX NFL Sunday, “This is America. If our country stands for anything, folks, it’s freedom. People died for that freedom. I’m not sure if our President understands those rights.” He urged Trump to focus on more pressing issues, saying, “Personally, I think our President should concentrate on North Korea and healthcare rather than ripping into athletes and the NFL.”
Trump’s Continued Criticism of Athletes
Despite Bradshaw’s advice, President Trump has maintained his outspoken criticism of athletes. Recently, he attacked LeBron James during his debut with the Philadelphia 76ers for “disrespecting” the national anthem. Additionally, Trump targeted players from the Atlanta Dream and Golden State Valkyries for leaving the court during the national anthem at the WNBA Finals, underscoring the ongoing tensions between the President and prominent sports figures.
Bradshaw’s willingness to speak candidly about President Trump, despite fearing backlash, reflects the complex intersection of sports, politics, and public discourse as the nation approaches the critical November Midterms.
