McDonald’s Ranks as America’s Favorite Fast Food Chain (Not exactly for its quality)
Despite not leading in quality or price, McDonald’s secured the top spot in a survey of nearly 50,000 U.S. consumers.

McDonald’s has been named America’s favorite fast-food chain in a YouGov survey of nearly 50,000 U.S. consumers. The study found that nearly 40% of respondents chose McDonald’s as their top fast-food choice. This ranking comes despite the chain not leading in categories of quality or value for money.
Chick-fil-A followed McDonald’s in the survey, with 35.5% of respondents naming it as their first choice, while Wendy’s ranked third with 33.2%. Burger King and Taco Bell rounded out the top five, receiving 31.6% and 31.2% of votes, respectively.
However, when a smaller group of 11,600 consumers were asked to rate chains on quality and value, McDonald’s did not come out on top in either category. Chick-fil-A was ranked as the best chain for quality, and Wendy’s was rated as offering the best value for money.
According to Ashley Brown, a senior director at YouGov and lead researcher for the report, McDonald’s secured its top overall position due to its reliability and accessibility. Brown stated that the chain’s winning formula includes value for money, dependable quality, and convenience, rather than solely low prices. She also noted that McDonald’s is easy to find, fast, and familiar, contributing to its perceived good value.
Despite not being ranked first for overall quality, McDonald’s fries were identified as the most popular menu item among U.S. diners. Approximately 39.2% of respondents named McDonald’s fries as their top choice, significantly ahead of Five Guys, which was chosen by 9% of respondents.
Customer satisfaction scores from the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) for 2025 indicated that Chick-fil-A received the highest score among fast-food brands with an 83, while McDonald’s received a score of 70, which was 1% lower than the previous year. Other chains like Starbucks and Panda Express scored 80. The ACSI report noted that McDonald’s has faced criticism over its value perception, with average menu prices increasing by approximately 40% since 2020.
