Elon Musk has signaled a combative stance ahead of the midterm elections, preparing for potential investigations by Democrats should they regain control of Congress. As Republicans anticipate losses next month, Musk warned that he will retaliate against efforts to scrutinize him and his initiatives, including the controversial U.S. DOGE Service he oversaw.

Musk’s Warning Amid Looming Investigations

Responding to a Politico report on Wednesday, Musk posted on X: “Live by the sword, die by the sword,” signaling his readiness for conflict. He stated, “Those who pick fights with me should understand that I will find out who is really pulling the strings and come for them, not just their puppets.” His remarks came as Democrats, energized by prospects of winning either chamber, expressed intent to investigate Musk’s business dealings and the activities of DOGE.

Democratic Lawmakers Seek Accountability

Senator Richard Blumenthal, ranking Democrat on the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, said in a Thursday interview that he plans to launch probes into Musk and DOGE if Democrats take control. Blumenthal criticized the group for the “cost, the consequences and the chaos” it caused and referenced a “web of potential corruption” needing exploration. He also dismissed Musk’s threats, saying, “He should have nothing to hide.” Blumenthal expects Democratic leadership to support these inquiries.

Meanwhile, Representative James Walkinshaw, a member of the House Oversight Committee, publicly challenged Musk to explain DOGE’s failures and alleged misinformation regarding savings. On X, Walkinshaw wrote, “Will you commit to testifying under oath to explain?”

The Controversy Surrounding DOGE and Musk’s Role

The U.S. DOGE Service, orchestrated by Musk as an adviser to President Donald Trump last year, aimed to cut federal spending by eliminating hundreds of thousands of jobs and restructuring government agencies. Musk claimed DOGE would save $2 trillion but reported savings totaled $215 billion, figures questioned by a Government Accountability Office audit that noted overstatements and misattribution of savings.

Staffed mainly by young tech workers selected by Musk and associates, DOGE accessed sensitive data on hundreds of millions of Americans while dismantling parts of the U.S. Agency for International Development. The audit found some savings were credited for lease cancellations and contracts predating DOGE’s existence.

Musk’s History of Confrontation and Political Investment

Musk has a reputation for aggressively countering challenges, including lawsuits and government officials. He relocated his businesses from California to Texas and openly joked in 2024 about the possibility of prison if President Trump lost re-election. He remains the largest individual donor in the 2026 midterms, contributing more than $350 million to support Republican candidates.

His social media posts warn of retribution for those who challenge him, including a 2023 X post stating, “There is a large graveyard filled with my enemies. I do not wish to add to it, but will if given no choice.” These statements underscore Musk’s readiness to resist political and legal pressures.

With the midterm elections just weeks away and Democrats favored to retake Congress, Musk and his allies face a potential onslaught of subpoenas and investigations. Activist groups like Investigate DOGE echo calls for accountability, fueling momentum for probes into the tech mogul’s influence and operations.

The unfolding political landscape sets the stage for a high-stakes confrontation between Elon Musk and Democratic lawmakers seeking to hold him accountable for his controversial role in government reform efforts and his sprawling business empire.
