Democratic Representative Haley Stevens surprised many on Nov. 1 by withdrawing her endorsement of Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan and instead backing Republican former Representative Mike Rogers. Stevens cited a decision of conscience for her switch, though Democratic leaders remain confident El-Sayed will prevail in the highly contested race to succeed retiring Sen. Gary Peters.
Stevens’ Unexpected GOP Endorsement
On Nov. 1, Stevens publicly announced her endorsement of Republican Mike Rogers, who previously served as a U.S. Representative, over the Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed. Stevens, who lost to El-Sayed in the Democratic primary, emphasized that her decision was not impulsive or influenced by others, including her fiancé, dismissing such speculation as “sexism dressed up as political analysis.” She stated her support for progressive issues like abortion rights and organized labor remains firm, but she ultimately concluded El-Sayed “is not fit to serve in the United States Senate.” Stevens criticized El-Sayed’s campaign ads, including one linking grocery prices to U.S. support for Israel and another featuring conservative commentator Tucker Carlson, as well as his association with Twitch streamer Hasan Piker.
Democratic Leaders Stand Firm Behind El-Sayed
Despite Stevens’ endorsement flip, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed confidence in El-Sayed’s ability to win the race. Speaking to reporters on Nov. 3 after voting, Schumer said, “She’s one vote,” underscoring the vast number of Michiganders who support El-Sayed’s message on issues like lowering the cost of gasoline and healthcare. He pointed to last-minute polls showing El-Sayed ahead of Rogers and highlighted that El-Sayed’s campaign is resonating with voters concerned about the cost of living.
Political Implications in a Key Senate Contest
The Michigan Senate race is a critical battleground in the fight for control of the U.S. Senate. Republicans currently hold a 53-47 majority, and the retirement of Democratic Senator Gary Peters has opened the seat. A victory by Rogers would strengthen Republican control, while an El-Sayed win would help Democrats try to narrow the majority. President Donald Trump praised Stevens’ decision, calling it a “brave choice” and encouraging her to join the Republican Party.
Reactions from Campaigns and Beyond
El-Sayed did not directly respond to Stevens’ endorsement change but had previously asked her not to campaign alongside him before her announcement. He remarked on Oct. 31 about the divisive nature of current politics, describing it as “really quite ugly.” Meanwhile, state Democratic leaders moved to oust Stevens from party leadership following her endorsement shift. Stevens, however, reaffirmed her commitment to Democratic values despite her controversial decision.
The evolving dynamics in Michigan’s Senate race continue to attract national attention as voters prepare to cast ballots in a contest that could influence Senate control in the new Congress.
