Wayne County is united in sorrow as it prepares to bid a final farewell to Sgt. Matthew Fishman, a dedicated public servant whose life was tragically cut short while upholding his oath to protect and serve. A memorial service, designed to celebrate his life and mourn his profound loss, is scheduled to take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the University of Mount Olive’s Kornegay Arena.

Sgt. Fishman, a respected figure in the community at the age of 38, was one of three Wayne County deputies who were shot during a harrowing incident on Monday. The deputies were attempting to serve involuntary commitment papers at a residence in Dudley when the violence erupted. While his fellow officers are thankfully on the path to recovery, the loss of Sgt. Fishman has left an indelible mark on the hearts of many.

Following the solemn service at Kornegay Arena, a dignified processional will escort Sgt. Fishman to his final resting place at Wayne Memorial Park in Dudley. It is there that he will be laid to rest with the full honors befitting a fallen hero, a testament to his bravery and sacrifice.

In the days since the tragic shooting, a makeshift memorial outside the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office Annex has become a poignant gathering place. Citizens have continued to leave flowers and pay their respects, a visible outpouring of grief and admiration for Sgt. Fishman. His patrol car, parked at the annex, stands as a silent sentinel, draped in a wreath and adorned with tributes from those who knew and admired him.

A Day of Unspeakable Violence

Sheriff Larry Pierce recounted the events of that fateful Monday, detailing how Sgt. Fishman, alongside Corp. Andrew Cox and Deputy Alexander Ramon Torres, responded to a home on Arrington Bridge Road around 10:30 a.m. Their mission was to serve involuntary commitment papers to 23-year-old Jourdan Hamilton. According to the Sheriff, the deputies identified themselves, but without any warning, shots were fired at them. All three officers were struck, triggering an urgent “officer down” call that alerted surrounding law enforcement agencies.

What followed was a tense standoff that lasted for hours. SWAT teams ultimately entered the residence at 8 p.m., bringing the situation to a tragic conclusion when they discovered that Hamilton had fatally shot himself. Sgt. Fishman succumbed to his injuries the following day, leaving a void in the community and the hearts of his loved ones.

A Life Dedicated to Service

Matthew Ryan Fishman entered the world on July 17, 1984, in Grand Forks Air Force Base, North Dakota. The son of Pastor Dave Fishman and Stacy Fishman, he was the middle of three brothers. His commitment to law enforcement began in earnest in December 2010 when he joined the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. Prior to this, he served with the Mount Olive Police Department, where he continued his dedication as an Auxiliary officer. During his tenure with the Sheriff’s Office, Sgt. Fishman showcased his versatility and dedication by serving on the Dive Team and as a K-9 Handler, skills that undoubtedly contributed to his effectiveness and the safety of his community.

Sgt. Fishman was an active member of Love Memorial Baptist Church, where he contributed to the Security Team and served in various other capacities, demonstrating his commitment to his faith and community beyond his professional duties.
