Rhein Amacher, a right-wing poster who helped spread the false claim that Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico was treated at a mental health clinic, has withdrawn from scheduled interviews, citing legal advice to avoid media engagement, according to a report by HuffPost.
Legal Pressure Forces Amacher to Step Back
Journalist Jesse Singal revealed on X that Amacher had been set to speak with him but ultimately canceled. Amacher shared a message explaining that his attorney issued a “stand down order” against participating in interviews and podcasts. He apologized for leading Singal on and said, “I don’t want to potentially get myself entangled in any legal hot water at this point.”
Disputed Claims About Talarico’s Mental Health
Amacher, along with independent journalist Nick Sortor, had claimed to possess evidence indicating that James Talarico was discharged from the Lindner Center of Hope, a mental health facility near Cincinnati. Their assertion was primarily based on a phone call they alleged confirmed Talarico’s treatment there. Both the clinic and Talarico have denied these claims. Talarico, who was reported to have had the flu, has since resumed campaigning.
Backlash from Conservatives and Public Figures
The report received significant criticism, including from conservative commentators. Pundit Carmine Sabia issued an apology on Tuesday, calling the story a “false report” and acknowledging he “got it wrong” after relying on the available information. However, neither Amacher nor Sortor has publicly admitted to any error.
Political Context Surrounding the Senate Race
Recent polls suggest James Talarico is competitive with or slightly ahead of Republican state Attorney General Ken Paxton. Paxton has faced numerous personal and professional scandals and was recently exposed for partying in Dubai with two fugitives from federal law enforcement.
This controversy over the mental health claims adds another layer of complexity to a heated Texas Senate race as candidates intensify their campaigns in the coming weeks.
As legal pressures mount, the future involvement of those who promoted the debunked mental health story remains uncertain. Meanwhile, Talarico’s campaign continues amidst ongoing political battles in Texas.
