Former West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin publicly declared he would never back a self-described socialist candidate, criticizing what he called their “crazy” policy positions ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Speaking on CBS’ Face the Nation on August 2, 2026, Manchin expressed deep concerns about the growing influence of socialist ideas within the Democratic Party and warned of potential consequences for government institutions and energy production.

Manchin Rejects Socialist Candidates Over Radical Platform

During the interview, Manchin was unequivocal when asked if he would support socialist candidates. “No way,” he said emphatically. “My God, no.” When pressed on whether he might support any of their ideas, he clarified, “I support the good ideas. But how could you support some of the crazy stuff they’re for?”

Manchin pointed to the socialist agenda’s desire to dismantle key government structures, including Congress and the Senate. “Have you seen their platform? They’re for dismantling everything that we know,” he said. He also criticized proposals from some socialists calling to defund or eliminate police forces, calling such ideas “crazy” and emphasizing the need for law enforcement to maintain safe, crime-free communities.

Concerns Over Energy Policy and National Security

Manchin highlighted the dangers he sees in socialist energy policies. “If Democrats can’t say that, and they start lining up with the socialist demands of what you are to be a socialist, energy will be gone,” he warned. “There’ll be no energy, OK? We have right now a tremendous amount of energy we’re producing, and the world depends more on us than ever before.”

He further stressed the importance of a strong national defense and secure borders, positions he fears the socialist wing of the party rejects or undermines. “We want a strong defense, we want a strong border,” Manchin insisted.

Heather Manchin Echoes Warnings on Party Direction

Joining her father on the program, Heather Manchin expressed concern that Democratic Party leadership has failed to push back against far-left candidates. “Control has now completely outweighed character,” she said, criticizing what she sees as a focus on winning elections at any cost over the values and platforms of candidates.

“If you’re more interested in control, and that’s all that matters, your vote count, versus the character of the person and the platform they’re running on, I think we’re living with the consequences of that,” Heather Manchin added.

Socialist Candidates Gain Momentum Amid Mixed Voter Views

The Manchins’ comments come as openly socialist candidates have won several Democratic primaries across the country in 2026. Politicians supported by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), such as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier, have grown in prominence within the party.

Polling data from July 2026 shows a shift in voter attitudes, with a Fox News poll indicating 52% of Democrats now hold a favorable view of socialism, compared to 41% favoring capitalism. Among all registered voters, favorable views of socialism have increased to 30%, up from 27% the previous year.

Despite the rise of socialist influence, Manchin’s stance reflects ongoing tensions within the Democratic Party between its moderate and progressive wings as the 2026 midterms approach.
