On Thursday, Oct. 29, Aerosmith made a triumphant return to the stage at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles for their concert “California, Dream On: Aerosmith & Friends.” The evening featured surprise appearances from rock legends, Hollywood stars, and MTV icons, including a standout moment when Johnny Depp joined Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry for a blistering guitar duet.

A Star-Studded Lineup Rekindles Rock Magic

The concert was marked by a series of high-profile guest appearances. Liv Tyler, daughter of Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler, and actress Alicia Silverstone, who co-starred in the band’s iconic 1994 “Crazy” music video, introduced the band to an enthusiastic crowd. Legendary musicians such as Dave Grohl took the drummer’s seat, while Billy Idol performed “Livin’ on the Edge” with guitarist Steve Stevens. The Black Crowes and Guns N’ Roses also contributed individual sets, each paying tribute to Aerosmith’s enduring influence on rock music.

Johnny Depp’s Electrifying Surprise Performance

The highlight of the night came when Johnny Depp emerged wearing blue-tinted sunglasses to join Joe Perry onstage during the energetic performance of “Train Kept A-Rollin’.” Perry introduced Depp to the audience, with Steven Tyler humorously noting the star was “here, in living color.” Depp’s guitar skills took center stage as he shredded alongside Perry, captivating the crowd before exiting the stage to applause. The band then closed with their classic “Walk This Way.”

Steven Tyler’s Return and Vocal Performance

Despite a near-career-ending injury in September 2023 that forced Aerosmith to cancel their Peace Out farewell tour in August 2024, 78-year-old Steven Tyler delivered a powerful performance. His voice carried its trademark rasp and growl, sometimes even raspier than usual, but he showed no signs of vocal distress. Tyler sprinted across the stage, adorned in gold rock attire and his signature colorful scarves, performing six Aerosmith classics including “Toys in the Attic,” “Back in the Saddle,” “Sweet Emotion,” and “Dream On.” The latter featured Tyler climbing atop a white grand piano as fog rolled out from under its lid, creating a dramatic spectacle.

Tributes from Rock Icons and Band Reunion

The night also featured heartfelt tributes from other rock greats. Heart sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson performed a soulful cover of “Never Loved a Girl” and a haunting version of “Janie’s Got a Gun.” Guns N’ Roses, led by Axl Rose and Slash, tore through three Aerosmith classics before delivering their own hits “Welcome to the Jungle” and “Paradise City.” The Black Crowes honored Aerosmith’s legacy, with frontman Chris Robinson recalling their first arena tour with the band. Closing the night, founding drummer Joey Kramer made an emotional return to the stage after more than six years away, joining Tyler and the rest of Aerosmith for the finale.

Aerosmith is slated to continue this celebration with a second night at the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday, Nov. 1.
