A judge in Minnesota has determined there is probable cause to believe Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Lindell violated campaign laws by distributing pillows promoting his campaign during a July Fourth parade in Delano. The decision on August 6, 2026, means the case will proceed to a formal evidentiary hearing before a panel of administrative law judges.

Details of the Pillow Giveaway Incident

The complaint filed on July 22, 2026, alleges that Lindell threw pillows emblazoned with “Mike Lindell for Governor” to parade spectators. According to the complaint, each pillow is valued at $34.95, although Lindell testified the campaign purchased them wholesale for $4.90 each. The giveaway took place during the annual Independence Day parade in Delano, Minnesota, where campaign staffers handed out the pillows to attendees.

Legal Implications Under Minnesota Campaign Law

Minnesota law prohibits any person from giving away items of monetary value to influence voters’ decisions or to induce them to vote in a certain way. The statute specifically mentions money, food, liquor, clothing, entertainment, or other things of value as potential violations. An exemption exists for refreshments or food valued up to $5 consumed at public or private gatherings, but this exemption does not apply to non-food items such as pillows.

Judge Nicholas Lienesch concluded that the circumstances surrounding the pillow giveaway meet the threshold of probable cause under this statute, allowing the case to move forward. Lindell submitted affidavits, invoices, and photos of the event during the hearing to support his defense.

Lindell’s Response and Campaign Position

Mike Lindell, who recently resigned as CEO of MyPillow to focus on his gubernatorial campaign, downplayed the hearing’s significance. He stated, “This is a nonsensical distraction, it means nothing. I am focused on my budget.” Lindell also noted that the pillows could be purchased by the public at a discounted price of $9.95 using a promo code, arguing the giveaway was not an improper inducement.

Despite the legal challenge, Lindell remains a leading Republican candidate in the Minnesota governor’s race. He has gained notable attention for his strong alliance with former President Donald Trump, who recently endorsed him. Lindell has maintained a controversial campaign, including repeated claims about the 2020 election being stolen, which have been widely debunked.

Political Context and Opposition

While Lindell has secured high-profile support, many within the Minnesota GOP view him as an outsider. Questions about his residency have surfaced, adding to the scrutiny of his candidacy. His main Republican rivals in the August 11, 2026, primary are businessman Kendall Qualls and Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth, both of whom have distanced themselves from Lindell’s more divisive rhetoric.

The upcoming evidentiary hearing will provide a clearer picture of whether Lindell’s pillow handouts violated campaign finance laws and could impact his campaign momentum heading into the primary.

The administrative hearing date has yet to be set, but the case highlights the challenges of campaign compliance and the legal boundaries surrounding political giveaways in Minnesota.
