On Monday, Rep. Randy Fine (R-Fla.) sparked controversy by demanding a reevaluation of the citizenship status of every American naturalized in the past 36 years, igniting fresh debate after being questioned about Melania Trump’s immigration history. The MAGA Republican’s comments came during an interview with NewsNation’s Nichole Berlie, who pressed him on whether scrutiny applied to Somali American Rep. Ilhan Omar should also extend to others linked to President Donald Trump’s White House, including first lady Melania Trump and entrepreneur Elon Musk.
Rep. Fine’s Sweeping Call to Review Citizenship Since 1990
Rep. Fine stated, “I believe that we should go back to 1990 and we should reevaluate everyone who has become a naturalized citizen.” He justified the broad review by citing concerns about improper paperwork, particularly in Minnesota, Omar’s home state. Fine claimed “many, many, many people” there had obtained citizenship without appropriate documentation. He insisted that Ilhan Omar should be the first to face this scrutiny, emphasizing she “certainly should not be the last.”
Questioning Melania Trump and Elon Musk’s Immigration Status
When pressed by Berlie about whether this reevaluation should include Melania Trump and Elon Musk—both of whom have faced immigration questions—Fine responded cautiously. He said, “I think anyone who was not honest in their immigration paperwork. I don’t know anything about the circumstances of the first lady or Elon Musk. I don’t know that there’s ever been an allegation.” Nevertheless, Fine pointed to past allegations against Omar, saying, “there have been allegations about Ilhan Omar’s citizenship issues going back 10 years, that people have refused to look at, including from the Somali community.”
Fine further asserted, “I believe that anyone who lied on their paperwork to become a citizen should be denaturalized and should be deported.”
Justice Department Probe and Political Context
Ilhan Omar’s citizenship status is reportedly under investigation by the Justice Department, with her home raided last week. Omar has claimed she is being targeted by President Donald Trump, who has long criticized her and demanded her deportation to Somalia, where she arrived as a refugee during childhood. The inquiry and Fine’s comments highlight the ongoing tensions surrounding immigration and citizenship within U.S. politics.
Melania Trump’s Immigration Background
Berlie reminded Fine that Melania Trump entered the United States on an EB-1A visa, often dubbed the “Einstein visa,” which is granted to individuals with extraordinary abilities. Despite the pointed question, Fine maintained he was unaware of any allegations concerning Melania Trump’s immigration paperwork. The exchange spotlighted the complicated intersection of immigration scrutiny and political allegiances.
Rep. Fine’s statements have intensified the debate over citizenship verification and the politicization of immigration issues, especially as investigations continue and political figures remain in the spotlight for their naturalization histories.
