As the midterm elections approach on November 3, 2026, Republicans find themselves grappling with significant challenges tied directly to President Donald Trump’s actions and policies. From tariffs disrupting agriculture to an ongoing war in Iran and rising inflation, Trump’s presidency is shaping voter sentiment and complicating efforts to defend Republican majorities in both the House and Senate.

Trump’s Policies and Their Political Fallout

President Trump’s decisions have had tangible economic consequences that are now affecting Republican candidates nationwide. His imposition of tariffs triggered a trade war with Canada, disrupting the agricultural sector and putting GOP Senate candidates on the defensive in key states including Iowa, Michigan, Kansas, Nebraska, Ohio, and Maine. The war in Iran, initially promised to last only weeks, has dragged on for eight months without a clear exit strategy, further straining Republican messaging.

Rep. Derrick Van Orden of Wisconsin, facing a vulnerable reelection campaign, acknowledged the difficulty, stating the Iran war is “making it exponentially harder for Republicans to keep the House and Senate.” Meanwhile, Trump’s insistence that the economy is doing well contrasts sharply with voters’ experiences of higher gas prices, costlier groceries, and persistent inflation, all consequences linked to his administration’s policies.

Financial Muscle vs. Voter Sentiment

Despite these obstacles, Republicans have leveraged a financial advantage. Trump’s political groups have spent nearly $277 million since September to support GOP candidates, positioning 2026 as potentially the most expensive midterm election ever. However, this massive spending spree may not be enough to overcome the political headwinds caused by Trump’s controversial decisions.

Critics highlight Trump’s dismissive attitude toward rising costs faced by Americans. At a Georgia rally, he infamously said he does not “give a damn” about criticism of gas prices, even as he celebrated soaring profits for U.S. oil and gas companies. Additionally, Trump’s personal financial gains, including $1.2 billion from crypto businesses, stand in stark contrast to the economic struggles of many voters.

Impact on Republican Candidates and Senate Races

Trump’s influence extends into Republican primaries, sometimes complicating general election prospects. In Texas, outgoing Senator John Cornyn warned that Trump’s primary pick, Attorney General Ken Paxton, is facing a tough race against Democrat James Talarico, signaling potential trouble even in reliably red states. Cornyn remarked, “Even in places like Texas, which are pretty red, we’ve got flawed candidates who I think are going to have a hard time.” This dynamic reflects broader challenges as Trump’s involvement may undermine GOP chances in competitive Senate contests.

Redistricting has also reduced the number of competitive House districts, but Trump’s interventions in various races could further erode Republican majorities. The combination of these factors leaves GOP lawmakers and strategists facing an uphill battle to maintain control of Congress.

Low Approval Ratings and Historical Context

President Trump’s approval rating stands at about one-third of U.S. adults, according to the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. This is lower than former President Joe Biden’s approval rating before the previous midterms and below Trump’s own first-term approval of around 40% at a similar point. For comparison, President George W. Bush’s approval was 37% before the 2006 midterms, and Barack Obama’s was about 45% before 2010.

Unlike Bush or Obama, who allowed some distance between themselves and their party’s candidates during low approval periods, Trump demands loyalty and leaves little room for Republicans to separate themselves from his controversial presidency. This dynamic adds further complexity to GOP efforts to hold their congressional majorities.

Trump’s Controversial Domestic Priorities

Beyond economics and foreign policy, Trump’s priorities have sparked voter frustration. His administration’s lavish Washington renovations, including a ballroom deemed “likely unlawful” by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, and plans for a triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery, have drawn criticism. Trump has vowed to defy a federal judge and proceed with closing a Potomac River park that has long been a community recreational space to build a “world class” golf course.

These projects symbolize a disconnect between the administration’s spending choices and the everyday concerns of many Americans, further complicating Republican messaging in the midterms.

With Election Day imminent, Republicans are confronting a midterm reckoning shaped by the decisions and style of President Trump. The party’s ability to maintain its congressional majorities hinges on overcoming the economic strains, voter dissatisfaction, and internal divisions that have emerged under his leadership.
