The town of Mount Olive, North Carolina, is synonymous with pickles. For nearly a century, this Eastern North Carolina community has been the heart of a thriving pickle industry, a heritage celebrated through local traditions, community events, and a beloved company that bears the town’s name. The story of Mount Olive’s pickle legacy is one of community spirit, innovation, and a dedication to a simple, yet iconic, food product.

The origins of Mount Olive’s pickle fame can be traced back to the mid-1920s. During this era, the region experienced bumper crops of cucumbers, but a lack of local demand meant many of these crops went to waste. Shikrey Baddour, a Lebanese immigrant from nearby Goldsboro, recognized the untapped potential. His initial idea was to brine the cucumbers and sell them to other pickling firms. He partnered with George Moore, who had experience in a pickle plant, but their venture struggled to find buyers for their brine stock.

By January 1926, a new vision emerged. Local businessman I.F. Witherington helped rally a group of 37 like-minded individuals to establish the Mount Olive Pickle Company, with the aim of packing and selling their own pickle products. This “community proposition” began with a modest 3,600-square-foot building and $19,500 in capital. The company’s foundational principles were clear: provide quality products and service, ensure a fair return for shareholders, be an enterprising employer, and remain a valued corporate citizen.

From these humble beginnings, the Mt. Olive Pickle Company has grown exponentially. It is now the largest independent pickle company in the United States, packing over 110 million jars annually and distributing its products in all 50 states. The company’s address, “Corner of Cucumber & Vine,” is more than just a location; it’s a branding element that has become synonymous with the town itself.

Over the decades, Mt. Olive has been a pioneer in the industry. In 1943, it established an employee profit-sharing plan, one of the first in the nation. The company also pioneered the use of high-fructose corn syrup in 1969, replacing sugar in its products, and later introduced the first line of “No Sugar Added” sweet pickle products in 2002, utilizing sucralose. More recently, in 2007, they launched picklePAK™, the first single-serve pickle cups. These innovations reflect a commitment to adapting to consumer needs and preferences while maintaining a focus on quality and value.

The impact of the Mt. Olive Pickle Company extends far beyond its product lines; it is deeply woven into the fabric of the community. The town of Mount Olive itself is celebrated through the annual North Carolina Pickle Festival, held each April in downtown Mount Olive. This beloved event brings together residents and visitors for a day of live entertainment, pickle-eating contests, car shows, and, of course, plenty of free pickles. The festival serves as a vibrant testament to the town’s unique identity and its pride in its pickle heritage.

Another unique tradition is the New Year’s Eve Pickle Drop, held annually at the Corner of Cucumber & Vine, where a large pickle descends to mark the arrival of the new year. The Mt. Olive Pickle Company also actively contributes to local initiatives through its Employee Community Fund, established in 1959, which has supported numerous community organizations.

The story of Mount Olive pickles is a narrative of how a regional agricultural product can become a source of immense local pride and economic vitality. From its inception as a way to support local farmers to its current status as America’s #1 best-selling brand of pickles, peppers, and relishes, the Mt. Olive Pickle Company embodies the spirit of its namesake town. The legacy continues to be preserved and celebrated, not only through the products that grace grocery shelves nationwide but also through the community events and traditions that keep the “sweetest secret” of Mount Olive alive and well.

The David John Aaron Teaching and History Museum in Mount Olive also features exhibits dedicated to the Mt. Olive Pickle Company, showcasing old jars, labels, and photographs that offer a glimpse into the company’s past. These artifacts serve as tangible reminders of the town’s rich pickle history and its enduring connection to this iconic food.

The Mt. Olive Pickle Company is more than just a business; it’s a cornerstone of Mount Olive’s identity. Its nearly 100-year history is a testament to the power of community, innovation, and a shared passion for a perfectly pickled cucumber.
