Two Marines stationed at Camp Lejeune have been formally recognized for their heroic actions during a nightclub shooting in Wilmington, North Carolina, in the early hours of June 6, 2026. Despite their efforts, one patron died, but their quick response likely prevented further casualties, according to U.S. Marine Corps officials.
Details of the Nightclub Incident
The shooting occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. at Unhinged, a popular nightclub in Wilmington. Cpl. Johnny Tamayo, a ground electronics transmission systems maintainer, had just returned from a deployment exercise and was enjoying the night with friends when the shooting erupted. Tamayo immediately identified the sound of gunfire and rushed to assist a victim found at the bottom of the club’s staircase.
While others fled, Tamayo began checking for additional victims and threats, calling for someone to contact law enforcement. Using his training, he improvised medical aid with towels provided by a bartender to stem severe bleeding from a gunshot wound to the victim’s neck.
Cpl. Emily Martinez Joins Aid Efforts
Outside the club when the shots rang out, Cpl. Emily Martinez, a transmissions system operator, immediately sought out Tamayo. Despite staff attempts to prevent her from re-entering, Martinez pushed through and joined Tamayo at the scene. She assisted in providing emergency medical care until law enforcement arrived.
Wilmington police later identified the victim as 23-year-old Emir Moore. A 29-year-old man from North Carolina has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting.
Marine Corps Recognition and Response
Both Marines serve with the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division. Their battalion learned of the incident after Tamayo provided a witness statement to local authorities. Master Sgt. James Boles, a communications chief with the battalion, praised the pair for demonstrating the selflessness and professionalism expected of Marines.
“We recently returned from a 10-month deployment where we trained and prepared for combat,” Boles said. “They executed exactly how a United States Marine should, and I’m immensely proud of them.”
In recognition of their actions, Tamayo was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, while Martinez received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
Community Impact and Safety Concerns
The shooting at Unhinged nightclub has raised concerns about safety at nightlife venues in Wilmington and the surrounding region. Local officials have reiterated their commitment to enhancing public safety and working with businesses to prevent future tragedies.
The rapid response by the Marines, trained for combat and emergency situations, highlights the importance of preparedness and quick thinking in crisis moments. Community members have expressed gratitude for their bravery amid a traumatic event.
As investigators continue to pursue justice in this case, the heroic actions of Cpl. Tamayo and Cpl. Martinez serve as a powerful example of courage and duty under pressure.
