The U.S. Air Force has removed all bombers from RAF Fairford in the United Kingdom following a security incident last month that resulted in the arrest of several suspects near the base, a Pentagon spokesperson confirmed on Sunday. The move comes amid ongoing investigations into alleged terror-related activities close to the air base, which has been used to launch American bomber missions targeting Iran.
Details of the Security Incident and Arrests
On September 27, five British men in their 20s from London were arrested near RAF Fairford on suspicion of explosives and terror offenses. Police found gasoline—an accelerant—in three vans linked to these suspects, although no explosives were discovered. The men have since been released on bail.
Additionally, a 25-year-old dual U.K.-Iranian national was detained in London on Thursday on suspicion of plotting a terror attack. He was released on bail on Saturday, according to Counter Terrorism Policing.
U.S. Bombers Returned to Home Stations
Following the incident, all U.S. bombers deployed to RAF Fairford—including B-1s, B-2s, and B-52s—have been returned to their home stations in the United States. The Pentagon spokesperson emphasized that American bomber crews remain ready to perform precision global strike missions from anywhere, including operations launched from the continental U.S.
The Wall Street Journal was the first to report the bombers’ removal from the U.K. base.
British and U.S. Officials Respond
U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham acknowledged last week that there are “strong indications that Iran played a part in what happened over the weekend at RAF Fairford.” He stressed that the investigation remains “ongoing, complex and serious,” with close cooperation between British and American authorities.
Iranian officials have repeatedly stated that any bases used to attack Iran would be considered legitimate targets. However, the Iranian Embassy in London issued a statement denying involvement and condemning “unfounded and malicious speculations” linking Iran to the incident.
Security Measures and Political Reactions
When asked about the security of RAF Fairford, a spokesperson for Prime Minister Burnham insisted the base remains secure and declined to comment on foreign military operations. The spokesman referenced Britain’s defense secretary, who highlighted the country’s “tried and tested approaches to defend our bases around the country and throughout the world.”
President Donald Trump praised British police, defense, and security services for their cooperation regarding RAF Fairford but expressed surprise that the suspects were released on bail, stating, “I wouldn’t have done that.”
The security incident marks a rare breach of safety near a key U.S. military base in the U.K., prompting heightened attention on counterterrorism efforts and international cooperation.
While the investigation continues, RAF Fairford remains a vital strategic base for American bomber operations, and officials from both nations have reiterated their commitment to maintaining its security.
