The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on July 23, 2026, that a new cyclospora outbreak is under active investigation, with the source yet to be identified. Meanwhile, health officials in North Carolina are closely monitoring more than 560 suspected cases linked to commonly consumed herbs and leafy greens such as cilantro, parsley, and lettuce since early May.
Ongoing FDA Investigation Into Multiple Cyclospora Outbreaks
The FDA confirmed it is conducting traceback investigations to pinpoint the origin of the latest cyclospora outbreak. Traceback procedures involve tracing the supply chain of potentially contaminated food products to identify their source and prevent further spread of illness. This current probe joins several ongoing investigations of cyclospora infections occurring across the United States in 2026.
One notable outbreak involves iceberg lettuce produced by Taylor Farms, sourced from central Mexico. This particular outbreak has affected thousands of individuals in nine states, including Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky, prompting Taylor Farms to voluntarily recall all iceberg lettuce from that region. While the FDA continues to investigate, at least 10 cases have been linked to a separate outbreak, and another outbreak is believed to have ended but remains under review.
North Carolina Reports Over 560 Suspected Herb-Related Cases
State health officials in North Carolina report more than 560 cyclospora cases potentially tied to consumption of cilantro, parsley, and lettuce since May 1, 2026. These herbs and greens are staples in many local dishes, raising concerns about contamination in the supply chain or agricultural practices. The investigation aims to determine whether the outbreak connects to any specific supplier or region.
Health officials emphasize the importance of reporting symptoms promptly and seeking medical attention if cyclosporiasis is suspected. The disease can cause severe gastrointestinal symptoms, including persistent, sometimes explosive diarrhea, which can be particularly dangerous for vulnerable populations.
Understanding Cyclospora and Cyclosporiasis
Cyclospora cayetanensis is a microscopic parasite that infects humans primarily through ingestion of contaminated food or water. Once ingested, it causes cyclosporiasis, a gastrointestinal illness marked by symptoms such as watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, and fatigue. The illness can last weeks to months if untreated and often requires a specific antibiotic regimen for effective treatment.
While cooking food thoroughly kills the parasite, washing fruits and vegetables is often insufficient to eliminate cyclospora, as the parasite can cling tightly to produce surfaces. This makes prevention difficult and highlights the need for improved safety protocols in food production and handling.
Nationwide Impact and Reporting Challenges
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports receiving 4,173 lab-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis nationwide since May 1, 2026. However, more than 7,400 additional reports await confirmation as further analysis is conducted. The iceberg lettuce outbreak alone has accounted for 1,947 confirmed cases from June 22 to July 20, 2026.
State health departments frequently report higher numbers than federal agencies due to differences in testing and reporting timelines. For example, Michigan health officials have confirmed 7,664 cases in the state, illustrating the extent of the outbreak. The CDC notes that cyclosporiasis is often underdiagnosed and underreported, meaning the actual number of infections is likely significantly higher.
As investigations continue, officials urge consumers to be vigilant about food safety, monitor for symptoms, and consult healthcare providers if illness develops. The FDA has committed to providing updates as new information emerges to help protect public health.
