The Wayne County Board of Commissioners has approved an agreement expected to bring more than $675 million in long-term investment to the county. This substantial commitment over the next 15 years is earmarked for healthcare services, infrastructure, workforce development, and economic growth, positioning UNC Health Wayne for future expansion and stability.

This pivotal agreement facilitates the complete integration of UNC Health Wayne into the broader UNC Health system. The culmination of over a year of detailed negotiations involving Wayne County, UNC Health, Wayne Health Corporation, and local hospital leadership, this integration aims to ensure the hospital’s continued role as a vital community asset while simultaneously expanding its service offerings.

Key initiatives within the planned investment include the modernization of existing facilities, robust efforts to recruit and retain essential healthcare professionals, the expansion of specialty and higher-acuity medical services, and the enhancement of technological capabilities and overall infrastructure. A particularly significant aspect of this plan is the strategic development of UNC Health Wayne into a Level III Trauma Center, with clear aspirations to achieve Level II status in the future. This advancement is designed to enable more patients to receive advanced care locally, thereby reducing the necessity for transfers to facilities outside of Wayne County.

The integration process also places a strong emphasis on preserving all essential hospital services, broadening the scope of outpatient and specialty care options, providing dedicated support for workforce development programs, and establishing a comprehensive regionalization strategy. This strategy aims to position UNC Health Wayne as a key regional referral hub for the eastern North Carolina region.

This $675 million commitment is being recognized as one of the most significant healthcare investments in the history of Eastern North Carolina. The economic benefits anticipated from this investment are considerable, projected to stimulate job creation and economic activity throughout Wayne County by supporting workforce development, physician recruitment and retention, capital improvements, and clinical growth. Furthermore, a newly established foundation by the Board of Commissioners will allocate a portion of this investment towards enhancing access to affordable healthcare for Wayne County residents for generations to come.

The proposal has now advanced to the UNC Health Wayne Board for its formal consideration and subsequent approval, a necessary step before the transaction can be fully finalized.
