Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations have agreed to increase pressure on Russia and have praised a deal aimed at ending the conflict with Iran. The summit, held in Évian-les-Bains, France, saw discussions shift toward Russia’s war in Ukraine following the announcement of the Iran agreement.
President Donald Trump announced the tentative deal to end the U.S. war with Iran shortly before arriving at the summit. He stated that with the Iran conflict resolved, the focus would now turn to efforts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine. The G7 leaders expressed support for the Iran deal, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney calling it a “game-changer” and a “historic opportunity.” The agreement is set for a ceremonial signing on Friday in Switzerland.
The G7 leaders agreed to increase pressure on Russia, including through sanctions targeting its oil and natural gas sectors. This move comes after sanctions on Russian oil were eased during the Iran conflict to help lower oil prices. Trump indicated that these sanctions could be reimposed as more oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined the G7 leaders for discussions on the war in Ukraine, with leaders agreeing to provide additional air defense capabilities and other means of protection to Ukraine.
The Iran deal itself involves reopening the Strait of Hormuz, lifting the United States’ naval blockade in the region, and providing financial incentives for Iran if it meets certain benchmarks. The agreement also reiterates Iran’s opposition to possessing nuclear weapons, though talks on its uranium stockpile are postponed. The memorandum of understanding includes the possibility of releasing Iran’s frozen funds, sanctions relief, and a $300 billion reconstruction fund, all contingent on Tehran meeting specific conditions. Trump has stated that the deal was negotiated from a position of strength, differentiating it from the 2015 nuclear agreement.
Despite the praise, some lawmakers in the U.S. have expressed skepticism and called for more information regarding the deal. The G7 statement also calls for further economic pressure on Russia. The summit also included discussions on artificial intelligence, with leaders set to meet with executives from AI companies.
