Wayne Community College Innovators Claim National Title with Groundbreaking Forestry Solution

WCC students win national design and machining competition with an innovative solution for the North Carolina Forest Service, showcasing exceptional engineering and teamwork.

In a remarkable display of ingenuity and technical prowess, a team of six talented students from Wayne Community College (WCC) has secured the coveted first-place award in a prestigious national design and machining competition. Their innovative solution, developed in collaboration with a local industry partner, not only impressed judges but also promises to significantly enhance efficiency in crucial land management operations.

A Triumph of Engineering and Collaboration

The victorious team, comprised of Connor Bailey, William Johnston, Alexander Lane, Joey Nakamura, Roni Santiago, and Tiffany Viera, emerged triumphant from the Phillips Design and Machining Student Competition. These bright minds are currently honing their skills within WCC’s rigorous Computer-Integrated Machining and Mechanical Engineering Technology programs, disciplines that demand a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application.

The competition itself presented a formidable challenge: student teams were tasked with identifying a real-world problem or an area ripe for improvement within a local company. Their mission was to conceptualize, design, and then physically manufacture a solution, leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as Haas CNC machines and Markforged 3D printers. This hands-on approach ensures that students are not just learning concepts, but actively applying them to solve tangible issues.

Addressing Forestry Needs with Precision Engineering

For their project, WCC’s winning team forged a vital partnership with the North Carolina Forest Service in Goldsboro. Recognizing the critical needs of the forestry sector, the students dedicated their efforts to developing a sophisticated, remotely controlled machine. This innovative device is engineered to precisely drill into the ground and deliver fertilizer, a critical task for nurturing forest growth and optimizing land management practices. The potential for increased efficiency and effectiveness in these operations is substantial, offering a tangible benefit to the state’s natural resources.

Judges Laud Innovation, Practicality, and Teamwork

The judging panel, composed of experienced application engineers, meticulously evaluated each submission based on a comprehensive set of criteria. Factors such as the innovation and practicality of the design, the demonstrated quality of teamwork, the effectiveness of their presentation, and the creative integration of technology were all taken into account. WCC’s team clearly excelled in all these areas, presenting a solution that was both technologically advanced and highly relevant to the needs of their partner organization.

A Rewarding Recognition for Excellence

The recognition for this outstanding achievement extends far beyond the accolades. As the first-place winners, the WCC team has earned an all-expenses-paid trip to the vibrant city of Los Angeles, California. This exclusive reward, sponsored by Phillips Corporation and Haas Automation, includes an immersive tour of a Haas factory. Here, the students will gain invaluable firsthand insight into the intricate processes of how the company’s state-of-the-art machines are conceived, engineered, and brought to life. Beyond the educational aspect, the trip also offers a well-deserved opportunity for the students to relax and explore the iconic attractions of Los Angeles, including a visit to a popular theme park.

Furthermore, each student on the winning team will receive a high-quality Haas digital caliper and micrometer set, essential tools for any aspiring machinist or engineer. Wayne Community College will also benefit from this success, receiving a $3,000 Markforged certificate. This valuable certificate is designated for the purchase of supplies and for supporting student certifications, further bolstering the college’s commitment to providing top-tier technical education.

WCC Dominates the Competition

The caliber of talent at Wayne Community College was further underscored by the overall results of the competition. A total of nine teams vied for the grand prize, a testament to the widespread engagement and high standards of participating institutions. Impressively, in addition to the first-place triumph, two other student teams from WCC also achieved remarkable success, securing spots within the top five of the national contest. This outstanding performance highlights the consistent quality and dedication present across WCC’s engineering and machining programs.

An Instructor’s Pride and Vision

Bailee Gilbert, an instructor for WCC’s Computer-Integrated Machining program, expressed immense pride in the students’ accomplishments. “Seeing all three of our teams place in the top five, including a first-place finish, is an incredible accomplishment and a true reflection of our students’ talent and dedication,” Gilbert stated. “These students took real-world industry challenges and turned them into creative, impactful engineering solutions through teamwork, problem-solving, and hours of hard work.”

Gilbert further elaborated on the students’ growth throughout the competition. “Throughout the competition, the students continuously stepped up when instructors challenged them to meet deadlines, think critically, and perform at a professional level,” she remarked. “We could not be more proud of the way they represented our programs.”

A Foundation for Future Success

The success of these WCC students in the Phillips Design and Machining Student Competition is more than just a victory; it is a powerful affirmation of the college’s commitment to providing students with the skills, knowledge, and practical experience necessary to excel in demanding technical fields. By tackling real-world problems with innovative solutions, these students have not only earned national recognition but have also built a strong foundation for successful careers in machining, engineering, and beyond. Their achievement serves as an inspiration to aspiring technical students across the nation, demonstrating the profound impact that dedication, collaboration, and cutting-edge technology can have when applied to solving meaningful challenges.
