Strong overnight thunderstorms moved through Granville County on Monday evening, bringing damaging winds that toppled trees and disrupted power for hundreds of residents. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Raleigh, North Carolina, issued a severe thunderstorm warning at 8:04 p.m. Monday, effective until 8:45 p.m., encompassing Granville, Durham, Vance, and Wake counties.
The warning advised residents to prepare for wind gusts reaching up to 60 mph. Forecasters anticipated damage to roofs, siding, and trees. Straight-line winds were expected to bring down trees, power lines, and potentially damage mobile homes and other structures.
Areas within Granville County specifically impacted by the warning included Oxford, Creedmoor, Butner, Kittrell, Stem, and Stovall.
Authorities advised individuals to seek shelter in an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building until the storm passed, and to stay away from windows due to the risk of flying debris.
While the immediate extent of the power outages was not detailed in the NWS warning, the expected damage to power lines and trees would likely lead to service disruptions, consistent with the initial report of hundreds without power in Granville County.
