Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, experienced massive withdrawals totaling $7.4 billion after suffering what security experts call the largest digital coin theft in history. The breach, which saw $6.3 billion stolen by cybercriminals linked by the FBI to North Korea, triggered widespread concern among users and regulators alike.

Massive Withdrawals and Partial Deposits

Following the cyberattack, Binance customers withdrew $7.4 billion from the exchange. On Monday, a Binance spokesperson confirmed that customers also deposited $2.7 billion after transactions resumed on Sunday for major cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin and Ethereum. This activity resulted in a net outflow of $4.7 billion from Binance’s holdings.

Despite the large withdrawals, Binance reported that these represent only 3% of its total assets, which stand at $157 billion. “The net outflow is a relatively limited portion of Binance’s overall asset base,” the spokesperson said. They also noted that withdrawal levels are stabilizing and returning to normal on-chain activity.

Details of the $6.3 Billion Cyber Theft

The FBI attributed the $6.3 billion digital currency theft to a hacker group known as “TraderTraitor,” believed to be connected with North Korea. The group was reportedly converting most stolen funds into Ethereum to obscure their trail. This group was also responsible for a February 2023 attack on the crypto exchange Bybit, which resulted in a $1.5 billion loss.

North Korea has denied any involvement in the incident. On Tuesday, Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, condemned the FBI’s claims as “a trite provocation” and “an absurd rhetoric.” She accused the U.S. of repeatedly attempting to link North Korea to cybercrime incidents as a way to spread misunderstanding internationally.

Freezing Assets and Binance’s Response

Binance has successfully frozen roughly $3 billion of the stolen digital assets. Freezing crypto funds allows token issuers to block transfers globally, restricting hackers’ ability to launder their ill-gotten gains. The FBI has urged private-sector entities to block transactions involving addresses connected to TraderTraitor to prevent further laundering.

In response to the attack, Binance promised to cover the full amount of the losses using company funds. By early Sunday morning, the exchange said it had compensated about 95% of the impacted amount, reassuring customers of its commitment to protecting their assets.

Impact on the Cryptocurrency Market

The breach and subsequent customer withdrawals have sent ripples through the cryptocurrency community. Binance’s swift resumption of transactions and its coverage of losses have helped stabilize the exchange, but the incident highlights ongoing security challenges in the digital currency space.

While withdrawals initially surged, Binance’s spokesperson emphasized that activity levels are returning to typical patterns. The company’s transparency and rapid response may serve as a model for handling major cyber incidents in the crypto industry.

The Binance cyber heist and resultant withdrawals underscore the vulnerabilities and resilience within cryptocurrency exchanges. As investigations continue, the industry will be watching closely to see how security and regulatory measures evolve to prevent similar incidents in the future.
