Texas Republicans, urged by President Donald Trump, redrew the state’s congressional map in 2025 aiming to flip five Democratic-held districts to GOP control. However, the plan largely failed on Nov. 3 as Democrats held four of the five targeted seats in the midterm elections, marking a major setback for the GOP’s strategy.
Redistricting Plan and GOP Losses
The Texas Republican Party, with strong backing from President Trump, redrew the congressional districts ahead of the midterms to seize five seats from Democrats. The goal was to strengthen GOP control in the U.S. House by capturing these key districts. Despite these efforts, unofficial election results showed Republicans on track to win only one of the five targeted seats.
Additionally, the Republican Party lost one of Texas’ U.S. Senate seats, the governor’s office, and other statewide races to Democrats this election cycle, compounding the GOP’s disappointing outcomes in the state.
Key Congressional District Races
Among the contested districts, the 32nd Congressional District in North Texas showed Republican Jace Yarbrough ahead of Democrat Dan Barrios in unofficial results as of 8 a.m. CT on Nov. 4. Meanwhile, in the 9th Congressional District, Democrat Leticia Gutierrez led Republican Alex Mealer, who conceded the race by posting on social media Wednesday morning.
South Texas races further underscored Democratic strength. The Associated Press and Decision Desk HQ called victories for Democratic incumbents Henry Cuellar in the 28th District and Vicente Gonzalez in the 34th District. In Texas’ 35th District, Bexar County sheriff’s deputy Johnny Garcia defeated Republican Carlos De La Cruz, brother of U.S. Rep. Monica De La Cruz.
Significant Seat Flips and New Faces
A notable flip occurred in Texas’ 15th District where Democrat Bobby Pulido, a Tejano musician, defeated incumbent Republican Monica De La Cruz, turning a key South Texas seat blue. In the open 23rd Congressional District, Democrat Katy Padilla Stout won over Republican Brandon Herrera, who faced scrutiny for past controversial comments.
These results highlight Democrats’ ability to maintain or flip important districts, despite the Republican redistricting efforts and political pressure from President Trump.
Implications for Texas and National Politics
The failure of the redistricting gambit despite aggressive efforts signals challenges for the GOP in Texas. It also reflects a broader trend of Democratic resilience in key districts and statewide races. President Trump’s involvement in pushing the redistricting plan did not translate into the expected electoral gains, and Republicans now control fewer seats than anticipated.
Democrats’ holds and flips in Texas may influence political strategies leading up to future elections at both state and national levels.
Overall, the 2026 midterm elections in Texas demonstrate the limits of redistricting as a tool to guarantee electoral success and underscore the competitive nature of Texas politics going forward.
