Elon Musk has made a significant financial push to help Republicans hold onto the Texas Senate seat in the upcoming fall elections. In September alone, Musk donated $158 million to Senate Republicans’ super PAC, with the funds quickly redirected to support incumbent Republican Ken Paxton’s campaign against Democrat James Talarico.

Musk’s Donations and Their Flow

According to recent federal filings, Musk, a Texas resident and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, made two major contributions to the Senate Leadership Fund (SLF), the main super PAC for Senate Republicans. On September 9, coinciding with the start of the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, Musk gave $75 million to SLF. The next day, SLF transferred that exact amount to Texas PAC, a political action committee heavily involved in advertising for Paxton’s Senate bid. Two weeks later, Musk gave another $83 million to SLF, which was again passed on the following day to Texas PAC.

Additional Support and Overall Contributions

Beyond these September donations, Musk also contributed $10 million in August to Lone Star Liberty PAC, another super PAC backing Paxton. Campaign finance filings reveal that Musk gave over $250 million to Republican-aligned groups in the third quarter of this year, including $89 million to his own America PAC. This PAC, initially launched to support President Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign, now backs Republican candidates nationwide and has spent over $23 million since July on competitive races.

The Stakes of the Texas Senate Race

The Texas Senate contest between incumbent Attorney General Ken Paxton and Democratic state lawmaker James Talarico is among the most expensive races this election cycle. Democrats have reason for optimism as Talarico has consistently held a slim lead in polls and raised $64 million in the third quarter—more than three times Paxton’s $18 million in the same period. Despite this, Republicans have significantly outspent Democrats in the final weeks leading to the midterms.

Implications for Senate Control

The Republican Party currently holds a 53-47 majority in the Senate, but Democrats are increasingly hopeful about flipping the chamber, particularly given their strong performance in Texas. Musk’s substantial financial support appears aimed at preserving Republican control. Andrew Romeo, spokesperson for America PAC, emphasized the stakes, stating, “If Democrats take control of Washington and win key gubernatorial and attorney-general races this November, then America risks becoming a socialist, woke and borderless country.” The Musk-backed groups hope to give Republicans “a fighting chance to defy history.”

As the November election approaches, the Texas Senate race remains a focal point in the broader battle for control of the U.S. Senate, with Elon Musk’s unprecedented financial involvement drawing national attention.
