President Donald Trump on Thursday publicly linked Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed to the Muslim Brotherhood, intensifying scrutiny over El-Sayed’s alleged family ties to the Islamist organization. The accusations come amid a heated political climate as El-Sayed campaigns for a Senate seat.
Trump’s Accusations Against El-Sayed
During a lunch in the White House Rose Garden, President Trump declared, “He’s a Muslim Brotherhood guy, 100%.” He questioned El-Sayed’s suitability for sensitive positions, adding, “How about having him be on the Senate Intelligence Committee? How about that? The guy’s 100% Muslim Brotherhood.” Trump also referred to El-Sayed as a “fraud” and a “con man,” emphasizing his intent to travel to Michigan to “expose this fraud that’s running.”
Family Allegations and Social Media Posts
Republicans have pointed to social media posts by El-Sayed’s half-sister, Eman Abdelhadi, who claimed their mother was an active member of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt during the 1970s. Abdelhadi’s 2012 posts on X stated, “Had an amazing talk with my mom about her activism in the Muslim Brotherhood during the early 70s while she was in college #respect,” and, “My family has long been MB, but I’ve always felt that it has navigated the political sphere poorly/destructively.” These posts have fueled Republican criticism of El-Sayed’s background.
El-Sayed’s Response to the Allegations
El-Sayed has firmly denied any family ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. In a recent interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, he stated, “I have no ties; we have no ties.” He accused his political opponents of using anti-Muslim rhetoric as a distraction from his policy positions. Regarding his opponent Mike Rogers’ strategy, El-Sayed said, “[Opponent Mike Rogers’] only strategy is to point to me and my name and my faith and to say that we’re different, and that you should suspect people simply because they are different than you in how they pray.”
Political Implications Ahead of the Senate Race
The controversy surrounding El-Sayed’s alleged connections has added a new dimension to the Michigan Senate race. President Trump’s public remarks aim to undermine El-Sayed’s credibility and appeal to voters concerned about national security. Fox News Digital has reached out to El-Sayed’s campaign for comment but has not yet received a response.
The debate over El-Sayed’s background is expected to play a significant role as the election approaches, with both sides mobilizing supporters and addressing the allegations in the public arena.
As the race heats up, voters in Michigan will be closely watching how these claims and responses influence the candidates’ standings and the broader political discourse.
