Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro landed in the United States after fleeing Brazil following his defeat in the country’s presidential election on Sunday. The move comes amid ongoing investigations into alleged corruption and money laundering. President Donald Trump approved Bolsonaro’s entry into the US, where he arrived with his wife and two daughters at Miami’s Opa-locka Executive Airport.
Flight From Brazil Amid Legal Pressure
Bolsonaro departed Brazil after losing the presidential runoff to leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who secured 4.4 million more votes in the second round. Brazil’s Federal Police canceled Bolsonaro’s passports when he failed to surrender them as ordered by Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. The justice had mandated Bolsonaro to turn in his passports within 24 hours on Monday, citing investigations into corruption and money laundering.
Despite Bolsonaro’s Instagram statement denying intent to flee, legal analysts warn that defying the court’s order could lead to arrest warrants. Allegations tied to Bolsonaro include involvement with illegal online betting operations and questionable funding linked to a biopic about his father, connected to Banco Master’s Ponzi-like scheme.
US Entry Approved by President Trump
President Donald Trump publicly supported Bolsonaro’s entry into the US, describing the election as “very strange” and “terrible.” Trump administration officials informed Bolsonaro that despite the passport surrender order, he would be allowed entry. The US is issuing visas to Bolsonaro and his family. It remains unclear whether Trump and Bolsonaro spoke by phone prior to the departure.
Bolsonaro was seen stepping off his plane at Miami’s Opa-locka airport with his family, later leaving the airport concealed under umbrellas. The move places Bolsonaro among a community of right-wing Brazilian exiles, including his brother Eduardo Bolsonaro and former Brazilian intelligence chief Alexandre Ramagem.
Controversy and Political Fallout
Bolsonaro’s flight echoes his father Jair Bolsonaro’s actions after losing the 2022 presidential election, when Jair relocated to Orlando, Florida. Jair Bolsonaro’s efforts to overturn that election culminated in a 27-year prison sentence, following a violent attack on Brazil’s capital by his supporters.
Brazilian President Lula criticized Flávio Bolsonaro’s departure as “shameful,” accusing him of avoiding the legal process in Brazil. Lula stated, “Brazil is their second homeland; their first homeland is the United States.” Bolsonaro initially refused to concede, seeking annulment of the election results.
Route Through Argentina and Ecuador
Speculation about Bolsonaro’s movements intensified after reports he fled via Argentina. Although Argentina initially denied his entry, the country’s immigration ministry confirmed on Tuesday that Bolsonaro and his family entered Argentina with valid documentation and departed soon after for Guayaquil, Ecuador. Ecuador’s foreign affairs ministry has yet to comment.
Bolsonaro’s Political Future Uncertain
Flávio Bolsonaro’s unexpected loss to Lula and subsequent flight raise questions about his political future and legal standing. His departure has sparked debate among supporters and critics alike, with his brother Eduardo calling rumors of fleeing “a lie” shortly before the runoff. The senator now faces the challenge of navigating ongoing investigations while in exile.
Bolsonaro’s move reflects the increasingly fraught political climate in Brazil and the broader regional implications as conservative figures seek refuge abroad. The situation remains fluid as legal authorities in Brazil continue to investigate.
