On October 18, 60 Minutes correspondent Lesley Stahl returned to the CBS broadcast with a powerful report sharply criticizing President Donald Trump’s efforts to undermine election integrity. The report followed a recent behind-the-scenes clash with CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss and focused on the escalating tensions around federal involvement in state-run elections ahead of the midterms.
Allegations of FBI Raids and Election Intimidation
Stahl interviewed Fulton County Commissioner Dana Barrett, who recounted the January FBI raid on a local Georgia election facility during the Trump administration. Barrett described the scene as militarized, saying, “They had vests. They had guns. They had all of the equipment on their belts as if they were raiding a drug house.” Barrett was compelled to hand over hundreds of ballots and voter rolls, yet remains uncertain about the FBI’s use of this material. She characterized the incident as part of a nationwide campaign to erode public trust in elections.
Federal Interference Concerns in Utah
Utah Republican Lieutenant Governor Deidre Henderson also shared concerns about unprecedented federal interference. Henderson noted that prior elections she oversaw involved threats mainly from external sources such as cyberattacks. However, she stressed that now threats are emerging from within the government itself. She revealed that the Justice Department demanded access to the statewide voter registration list, which includes sensitive information like social security numbers, full birth dates, and driver’s license numbers—data typically protected by law.
Trump’s Executive Orders and Election Doubts
Stahl highlighted President Trump’s attempts to impose federal voting rules through two executive orders despite elections being managed locally. During his 21 months in office for his second term, Trump has expressed distrust in the voting process more than 150 times, according to Stahl. These repeated claims have raised alarms among election officials and observers about the potential impact on public confidence and election integrity.
Justice Department’s Response
Harmeet Dhillon, head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, addressed concerns about possible disruptions in the midterms. Dhillon stated, “Well, I don’t know what is going to happen, but I can tell you that absent some shocking contingency that is unexpected, there should be no interruption in the usual course of counting and certifying the results in the states.” Her remarks sought to downplay fears of interference despite mounting tensions.
Behind-the-Scenes Tensions at 60 Minutes
This report aired just a week after Stahl reportedly contemplated leaving the program following a dispute with Bari Weiss concerning a segment on Israeli settlers in the West Bank. Stahl has been with 60 Minutes since 1991 and remains one of the few longtime correspondents continuing amid internal upheaval alongside Bill Whitaker and Jon Wertheim. The latest report underscores the program’s commitment to high-profile political coverage despite the challenges behind the scenes.
Lesley Stahl’s October 18 broadcast on 60 Minutes delivers a pointed critique of President Trump’s actions concerning election integrity, highlighting serious concerns from local officials and federal responses as the nation approaches the midterm elections.
