House Democrats Prepare Sweeping Investigations of President Trump if They Win Majority

As November’s midterm elections approach, House Democrats are positioning themselves to launch extensive investigations into President Donald Trump’s administration and family finances, should they regain control of the House of Representatives. With Republicans currently holding the majority, Democrats have little time left this session and are already mapping an aggressive accountability agenda for 2027 that targets Trump’s business dealings, government management, and use of presidential powers.
Probing Trump Family Wealth and Business Ties
Central to the Democratic investigation plans is scrutiny of how President Trump and his family have increased their wealth during his second term. Rep. Robert Garcia (D-California), poised to lead the House Oversight Committee if Democrats retake the majority, has highlighted significant foreign payments and cryptocurrency profits reportedly totaling over $2 billion in the first year of Trump’s second term. Meanwhile, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Maryland), expected to chair the Judiciary Committee, is investigating venture capital investments tied to Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, with particular focus on firms that secured government contracts or benefited from favorable administration policies.
Other areas under review include Trump’s controversial IRS settlement that limits future audits of his family’s businesses, the monetization of his social media platform Truth Social through paid prioritization of posts, and Jared Kushner’s business dealings since returning to private life. Democrats also plan to examine Trump’s clemency decisions, especially pardons granted to convicted fraudsters with close campaign or political ties, such as nursing home executive Joseph Schwartz, who received a pardon months after being convicted of a $38 million government fraud.
Investigating Government Contracts, Settlements, and Regulatory Actions
Democrats are also scrutinizing energy and mining deals linked to Trump supporters. Rep. Jared Huffman (D-California) is focused on a $1.2 billion settlement with a German energy company that ceded offshore wind leases in exchange for reinvestment in a Louisiana liquefied natural gas project owned by a Trump donor. Huffman calls this a “slush fund” misusing taxpayer dollars.
Additional targets include Trump’s blanket pardon for Jan. 6 Capitol attack participants and regulatory decisions such as reopening a Southern California oil pipeline dormant since a major spill more than a decade ago. These investigations aim to reveal potential abuses of power benefiting Trump allies and campaign donors.
Examining Trump’s White House Renovations and Federal Agency Changes
Beyond financial probes, Democrats plan to investigate President Trump’s efforts to reshape the federal government and renovate key Washington landmarks. Projects such as the rushed and flawed repairs to the Reflecting Pool, Trump’s takeover and changes at the Kennedy Center, and the construction of a new White House ballroom without typical approval processes will come under scrutiny. These efforts raise questions about the use of taxpayer funds and adherence to protocol in federal projects.
Democrats are preparing to closely examine how Trump’s administration has repurposed federal agencies and funds, potentially prioritizing loyalty over expertise and efficiency in government operations.
White House Pushback and Political Context
The White House has dismissed these Democratic plans as partisan obstruction. White House spokesperson Olivia Wales stated, “Democrats have no agenda to improve the lives of the American people, just plans to obstruct and baselessly target President Trump’s commonsense agenda.” Meanwhile, Trump administration officials are reportedly strategizing ways to block or delay investigations if Democrats regain House control.
Despite these challenges, House Democrats view investigations as a vital tool for accountability and transparency. They acknowledge the scope will require coordinated efforts across committees and the entire Democratic caucus to address the complex web of financial, political, and regulatory issues tied to President Trump’s second term.
With the midterm elections just weeks away, the potential shift in House control could mark the start of a new chapter in congressional oversight of the Trump presidency, with far-reaching implications for governance and political accountability.
